We’ll look at how artists have drawn the sea and try out a range of techniques, with the aim of finding ways to create your own personal response to the sea.

Walking and drawing outdoors offers opportunities to approach drawing in an active and participative way, and is great for both our physical and mental health too. Walkshops and events explore ways to walk and draw, in a relaxed and friendly environment. Using an experimental approach, we can find inspiration in our surroundings and look at what is around us with a fresh set of eyes. We’ll embrace serendipitous encounters and how we can draw both whilst walking and when pausing on a walk.

Walkshops are led by experienced artist and tutor, Ruth Broadbent. There will be opportunities for guidance, prompts and reference to other artists, with time to reflect, ask questions, discuss and respond to drawings, and find your own ways to walk and draw. There are possibilities to apply techniques and processes for both experimental and more traditional ways of drawing, from measuring and perspective, scale and tone to embracing the act of walking itself in our drawings.

Events can be online or in person, in a variety of locations, and range from regular local in-person walk.draw group walkshops to bespoke 1-to-1 sessions or events for organisations, colleges, groups, conferences, companies, festivals, and other settings, both locally and further afield. All enquiries welcome –  drop me a line via my contact page to discuss options and prices.

About walk.draw

I set up walk.draw in 2021 as a result of leading drawing walkshops, designing drawing walking events for festivals and conferences, being part of drawing and walking artist networks, and creating artwork based around walking and drawing.

As a Co-Creator at the Museum of Walking, I create walking drawing walkshops. These have included Drawn to the Skyline (Tate to St Pauls) and Up and Down (London Festival of Architecture).

I have created online and in-person walking drawing activities and events for organisations and festivals including the Urban Tree Festival, Walking Arts Encounters / Conference (Greece), Made of Walking (France), and more locally in Oxfordshire (UK). I am a Co-Director of Walking the Land CIC. My work, Fieldwalking – Groundlines, is shortlisted for the Marŝarto Awards 2024 walking arts award

Having taught drawing and sculpture in art colleges, universities and adult education for over ten years, I can draw on a wide range of techniques, materials, processes and subject matter to do my best to adapt an event to what you are looking for. Alongside general walking and drawing courses, I have also designed specialist courses such as ‘Encounters in the Field: a creative and experimental response to a site through drawing.

You can find out more about my art practice, exhibitions and my work with other organisations and artist networks, including walking drawing projects, on my website www.ruthbroadbent.com

I’ll gradually add more to this webpage as I grow walk.draw. Any questions, drop me a line via my Contact page. I look forward to meeting you and walking drawing together.
